Q: What is The Bay State Herald?
A: The Bay State Herald is an independent media organization based in Boston’s Back Bay. We focus on community-first coverage across Boston, the Bay State, and far reaches of New England. To learn more about the Herald, visit our about page >>
Q: How much will I get paid?
A: The Bay State Herald operates similarly to a nonprofit organization. As a result, any money brought in is immediately put back into the company so it can continue to flourish as a beacon of truth throughout the Commonwealth and greater New England area.
Q: I don’t like to write, can I still help out?
A: Absolutely! Outside of editorial, many of our available positions require little to no writing at all.
Q: I want to become a talented journalist, but I’m a really bad writer. Can I still apply?
A: Yes! As a wise editor once said, “We can teach writing, but we can’t teach curiosity.” If you put in the effort and are hungry enough to grind away at a story, our team of experienced editors will transform you into a literary luminary.
Q: I have a disability and may need extra time/accommodations. Is that okay?
A: Of course. Besides being an equal opportunity organization, the Bay State Herald strives to be ahead of the industry curve when it comes to disability inclusion. In fact, the Herald is proud to be of the few organizations with a known legally-blind managing editor.
Q: I like taking photos/videos. Is that allowed?
A: YES! Our multimedia is always looking for new staff members.
Q: I’m opinionated and only want to write about my opinion because I’m always right. Do you allow opinion writers?
A: We love hot takes and eye-opening opinion pieces! Our opinion sections is always looking for more device viewpoints!
Q: Okay but if I write opinion am I still allowed to write for news?
A: Yes, so long as your opinion does not directly conflict with the story you are covering.
